Technique

How to perform Cable Hip Abduction (Toe in)

  1. Attach an ankle cuff to a low pulley and fasten it around the ankle farthest from the machine, then stand sideways to the stack while holding the upright or support bar for balance with your inside hand.
  2. Shift your weight onto the leg closest to the pulley, soften that knee, and hinge slightly forward at the hips to keep your torso stable and core engaged.
  3. Point the toes of your working (cuffed) foot slightly inward so the foot is “toe‑in,” which helps bias the gluteus medius and minimus.
  4. Exhale as you abduct the working leg directly out to the side in a smooth arc, maintaining the toe‑in position and resisting any torso sway or hip hike.
  5. Pause briefly when your leg reaches roughly 30–45 degrees from your body, squeezing the side glutes while keeping tension on the cable.
  6. Inhale as you lower your leg under control back to the starting position, stopping just before the weight stack makes contact to preserve constant tension.
  7. Repeat for the prescribed repetitions, then turn to face the opposite direction, switch the cuff to the other ankle, and perform the movement on the opposite side.
