Technique

How to perform Typewriter Pull-Up

  1. Grip a pull-up bar with a shoulder‑width overhand grip and hang with arms fully extended, shoulders depressed, core braced, and legs together.
  2. Exhale as you pull your chin above the bar, then shift your body toward your right hand by straightening your left arm while keeping your right elbow fully flexed - your chin should hover over the right hand.
  3. Keeping your chest close to the bar, inhale as you traverse horizontally by bending your left elbow and straightening your right, gliding your torso in a smooth arc toward your left hand.
  4. Pause briefly when your chin is over the left hand, maintaining active shoulder engagement and avoiding lower‑body swing.
  5. Exhale as you reverse the traverse back to center, re‑bending the right elbow while straightening the left until your chin is once again above the midpoint of the bar.
  6. Inhale as you lower under control to the full dead hang before repeating, alternating starting sides each rep for the recommended number of repetitions.
