Short answer
For building muscle, most working sets should probably end about 1 to 3 reps away from failure. That means if you absolutely had to, you could do 1 to 3 more clean reps before your form breaks down or the weight stops moving.
You do not need to take every set to failure. You also probably should not stop every set with 6 easy reps left just because the workout says 8 to 12 reps. The set still has to be hard enough to count.
A good basic rule is this: keep most compound lifts around 1 to 3 reps in reserve, and use true failure more selectively on safer isolation exercises or the last set of a movement. That gives you most of the muscle-building stimulus without turning the whole workout into a recovery problem.
What failure actually means
Training to failure means you keep going until you cannot complete another rep with acceptable form. Not "this feels uncomfortable." Not "I am bored." Not "my playlist got weird." Actual failure means the next rep is not there without changing the exercise into something else.
Reps in reserve, usually shortened to RIR, is just the opposite way of describing that same idea.
- 0 RIR means you hit failure.
- 1 RIR means you probably had 1 more rep.
- 2 RIR means you probably had 2 more reps.
- 3 RIR means you probably had 3 more reps.
- 5+ RIR means the set was probably too easy for muscle growth unless it was a warm-up or technique set.
This is not perfect math. It is a practical language for effort. The point is to avoid pretending all sets are equal just because they have the same number of reps on paper.
The part people usually get wrong
A lot of people think the rep range is the magic part. They see 8 to 12 reps and assume that any set inside that range is a hypertrophy set.
That is not really how it works. A set of 10 that you could have done for 18 is not the same as a set of 10 where rep 11 would have been ugly. They are both 10 reps, but one was much closer to creating a real training signal.
This is why "hard sets" matter so much. If your program says 3 sets of 10, the hidden instruction is not just "do 10 reps." It is closer to "pick a weight where 10 reps lands near the edge of what you can do cleanly."
Why close to failure helps muscle growth
Muscle growth is not just about moving weight around. The muscle has to be challenged enough that your body has a reason to adapt.
A 2024 meta-regression on proximity to failure found that muscle hypertrophy tended to improve as sets were stopped closer to failure, while strength gains looked similar across a wider range of RIR. The authors were careful about the limits of the analysis, but the general idea is useful: for muscle growth, effort matters. PubMed
This does not mean failure is magic. It means stopping too far away from failure can turn working sets into warm-up sets wearing a costume.
Why failure is not always better
The other mistake is assuming that if hard sets are good, then maximum effort on every set must be better. That sounds logical until you have to recover from it.
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found that training to failure did not appear to be required for gains in strength or muscle size. It also did not look inherently harmful for those adaptations, but it was not necessary as a default setting. PubMed
A separate scoping review noted that training to failure may increase fatigue, muscle damage, and discomfort compared with non-failure training, which can matter for recovery and long-term consistency. PubMed
That is the tradeoff. Failure can make a set undeniably hard. It can also make the rest of the workout worse, make the next session worse, or make you dread movements that should be productive.
The simple rule I would use
For most lifters, most of the time:
- Compound lifts: stop with about 1 to 3 reps in reserve.
- Isolation lifts: stop with about 0 to 2 reps in reserve.
- Heavy sets for strength: stop with about 1 to 4 reps in reserve, depending on the phase and the lift.
- Warm-up sets: do not worry about RIR. They are not supposed to be hard.
This is not a law. It is a starting point. A controlled set of curls to failure is a very different thing than a squat set to failure where your form turns into a negotiation.
How this changes by exercise
Not every exercise has the same cost when you take it to failure.
Going to failure on lateral raises, cable curls, machine chest press, leg extensions, or triceps pushdowns is usually pretty manageable. You fail, the weight stops, and your body is not in a dramatic position.
Going to failure on squats, deadlifts, barbell rows, heavy Romanian deadlifts, or heavy overhead presses is different. The fatigue is higher, the technical breakdown can matter more, and the recovery cost can spill into the rest of the week.
That does not mean you can never push big lifts hard. It means the closer an exercise gets to being heavy, technical, and systemically fatiguing, the more useful it is to leave a little room.
How this changes by goal
If your main goal is muscle growth, you usually want most sets close enough to failure that the target muscle is clearly challenged. That is where the 1 to 3 RIR idea works well.
If your main goal is maximal strength, you still need hard training, but you do not need to live at failure. Strength practice benefits from heavy, repeatable reps. Grinding every set until it breaks can make technique worse instead of better.
If your main goal is learning a new lift, stay farther from failure. A beginner learning to squat does not need to discover their true failure point on day one. They need repeatable reps, useful practice, and enough effort to build strength without turning every set into a panic test.
How beginners should use reps in reserve
Beginners are often bad at guessing how many reps they have left. That is normal. If you have never pushed a set hard, your brain may call rep 8 "failure" when your body had 5 more reps hiding in the basement.
The fix is not to max out everything. The fix is to occasionally test yourself on safer exercises.
For example, on a machine row, leg curl, cable curl, or pushdown, you can take the last set close to failure and notice what the final reps actually feel like. The last few reps usually slow down. Your form starts wanting to cheat. The burn gets louder, but the reps are still possible until they are not.
Once you know what failure feels like, stopping 1 to 3 reps short becomes much easier.
How to know if a set was hard enough
A set was probably hard enough if:
- The last few reps slowed down.
- You had to focus to keep clean form.
- You could honestly only do a few more reps.
- The target muscle was the limiting factor, not your ego or balance.
- Your logbook shows progress over time.
A set was probably too easy if you finished and immediately knew you could have done 5, 6, or 7 more reps. That might be fine for warm-ups. It is probably not enough for your main muscle-building work.

Where failure fits with weekly sets
Failure and volume are tied together. If you take every set to failure, you may need fewer total sets. If you leave 2 or 3 reps in reserve, you may be able to handle more weekly work.
This is why the answer to how many sets per muscle group per week depends partly on how hard those sets are. Ten hard sets near failure are not the same recovery cost as ten easy sets. They are also not the same stimulus.
The basic idea is to combine enough weekly sets with enough effort. Volume without effort becomes fluff. Effort without recovery becomes a problem.
When you should back off
If your performance is dropping, your joints are irritated, and every workout feels worse, the answer is probably not more failure sets.
Back off when you notice:
- Your reps are falling across multiple sessions.
- Your form is getting worse at the same weight.
- Soreness is interfering with the next workout.
- You are dreading lifts you normally tolerate well.
- You need more and more warm-up just to feel normal.
At that point, leave more reps in reserve for a week or two, cut a few sets, or remove failure work from big lifts. The recovery article covers this bigger picture, but the short version is simple: if you cannot recover from the training, it is not a better plan just because it was harder.
Where progressive overload fits
Training close to failure is not the same thing as progressive overload. It is one part of making a set meaningful.
Progressive overload is the broader process of making training more demanding over time. That might mean more reps, more load, cleaner technique, more total work, or better control. Failure is just one intensity tool.
If you take every set to failure but never add reps, never improve technique, never recover well, and never build consistency, you are not automatically progressing. You are just working very hard.
A practical example
Let us say your dumbbell press target is 8 to 12 reps.
- If you stop at 10 reps but could have done 17, the set was probably too easy.
- If you stop at 10 reps and could maybe do 2 more, that is a useful working set.
- If you hit 10 reps and fail rep 11, that is also a hard set, but it may cost more recovery.
- If every set is a failed rep attempt, your later sets may get worse fast.
A normal progression might be to keep most sets around 1 to 2 RIR, then occasionally push the last set closer to failure to check whether your estimate is honest.
