Practical context
Estimate body fat percentage with the circumference-based U.S. Navy method or a BMI-based method. Both are screening estimates, so consistent measurements and long-term trends are more useful than treating one result as exact.
Body fat percentage estimates the share of total body weight that comes from fat mass. The rest includes muscle, bone, organs, water, and other fat-free tissue. Two people with the same weight can have different body compositions and very different training goals.
A calculator cannot directly observe those tissues. It applies an equation to measurements that correlate with body composition in a reference population.
The Navy method uses height and body circumferences. For men, it uses neck and waist. For women, it also uses hip circumference. The relationship between those measurements supplies the estimate.
Circumference estimates are convenient and repeatable at home, but tape placement and tension matter. Measure against the skin or thin clothing, keep the tape level, and do not pull it tightly enough to compress tissue.
The BMI method uses BMI together with age and sex. It is useful when circumference measurements are unavailable, but it inherits BMI's inability to distinguish muscle from fat. Very muscular people and people whose body composition differs from the underlying reference group may receive a less useful estimate.
If both methods are available, do not expect identical answers. Compare repeated results from the same method rather than switching methods whenever one produces a preferred number.
Different tape locations, measuring after a large meal, flexing, holding the breath, and changing tape tension can all create an apparent body fat change. Hydration and digestion can also change circumferences without corresponding fat loss or gain.
Measure under similar conditions, ideally at the same time of day. A smooth multiweek trend matters more than a small single-reading difference.
Body fat percentage can help estimate lean mass, interpret FFMI, or set a target body weight. It does not measure health, athletic performance, or appearance by itself.
If a result seems implausible, remeasure before making a diet decision. Clinical methods can also contain error, so precision to a tenth of a percent should not be mistaken for certainty.
