Practical context
Fat-free mass index compares estimated lean mass with height. This FFMI calculator reports raw FFMI and height-adjusted, or normalized, FFMI so muscularity can be considered without relying on BMI alone.
FFMI stands for fat-free mass index. It resembles BMI, but uses estimated fat-free mass instead of total body weight. Fat-free mass includes muscle, bone, organs, water, and other non-fat tissue, so FFMI is not a pure skeletal-muscle measurement.
FFMI can add context for lifters whose BMI is elevated by muscularity. It still depends on a body fat estimate and should be tracked as a range rather than treated as laboratory precision.
First calculate fat-free mass: body weight x (1 - body fat percentage / 100). Raw FFMI is fat-free mass in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
The normalized FFMI formula adjusts the result to a reference height of 1.8 meters: adjusted FFMI = FFMI + 6.3 x (1.8 - height in meters). This is the 6.3 adjustment used by the current calculator, not the 6.1 value repeated by some older secondary pages.
These labels provide broad physique context. They are not medical categories, sport classifications, or proof of drug use. Body fat measurement error can move someone across a boundary.

BMI uses total body weight, so it cannot distinguish a muscular lifter from a person carrying more fat at the same height and weight. FFMI uses estimated lean mass and is therefore more relevant to muscular development.
Neither metric replaces health markers or direct clinical evaluation. BMI can still serve population screening, while FFMI can provide physique-specific context when body fat is estimated reasonably well.
A frequently cited 1995 study of male athletes observed that nonusers in its sample generally did not exceed a normalized FFMI of about 25. That observation is often simplified into a universal natural limit, but it was not designed to prove that every drug-free person must remain below 25 or every person above it uses drugs.
Do not use FFMI as a drug-use test. Genetics, body fat measurement error, population differences, and unusual frames all affect interpretation.
Use the same body fat method, similar hydration, and similar measurement conditions. A change in FFMI caused by a different body fat estimate is not necessarily new muscle.
Pair the result with circumference measurements, strength trends, body weight, and training performance. Slow changes are expected once someone is well trained.
