This Casey Butt muscular potential calculator uses the Casey Butt formula with your height, wrist size, ankle size, body weight, and body fat percentage. It estimates maximum natural muscular potential, a more practical 95 percent target, and proportional body-part measurements for a steroid-free lifter.
Muscular potential is an estimate of the lean mass a drug-free lifter may be able to carry after years of productive training. It is not a prediction of how fast you will gain muscle, and it does not mean every person with the same measurements will finish at exactly the same body weight.
The useful question is not whether a formula can name a perfect genetic ceiling. It is whether your current measurements suggest that you still have a large, moderate, or relatively small amount of muscle left to gain. That context can keep short-term scale changes from distorting long-term expectations.
Casey Butt studied the measurements of successful drug-free bodybuilders and developed equations that relate muscular potential to height and skeletal frame size. Wrist and ankle circumferences act as practical frame-size proxies. That is why a Casey Butt frame size calculator asks for more than height and current body weight.
The model estimates maximum steroid-free lean body mass, converts that lean mass into a scale weight at your selected body fat percentage, and estimates proportional muscular measurements. Small measurement errors matter because wrist and ankle size are direct formula inputs. Use a flexible tape and keep it snug without compressing the skin. Measure the wrist at its smallest point near the hand. Measure the ankle at its smallest point above the ankle bones.
Take each measurement at least twice. If the readings differ, reposition the tape and repeat them rather than averaging obviously inconsistent measurements. Select imperial or metric units before entering every value so inches and centimeters are not mixed.
The maximum result is the upper estimate produced by the Casey Butt formula. It represents an unusually developed drug-free physique under the model's assumptions. The realistic result is 95 percent of that estimate and may be a more practical long-range planning target.
A result below the estimate does not prove that your training is ineffective, and reaching the estimate does not mean future improvement is impossible. Muscle distribution, training history, measurement error, bone structure, and individual response can all move a real person away from a population-based model.
The chest, upper arm, forearm, neck, thigh, and calf values describe proportions associated with the model's maximum muscular body weight. They are not required measurements and should not override balanced training decisions.
Use them to notice large proportional gaps or to set broad physique goals. Compare measurements under the same conditions because a flexed arm, pumped muscle, different tape position, or different body fat level can change circumference readings without representing new muscle tissue.
When you are far below the realistic lean-mass estimate, a well-designed hypertrophy phase may have a meaningful long-term payoff. As you move closer, progress normally becomes slower and smaller. That may justify more conservative expectations, longer training blocks, and greater attention to weak areas rather than repeatedly forcing rapid scale gain.
Recalculate only when an input meaningfully changes or when you have a more reliable body fat estimate. Wrist and ankle size should not fluctuate from week to week. Treat the result as a planning reference, not a score you need to manipulate.
No formula can measure genetics, training quality, injury history, sleep, nutrition, or years of consistent effort. Body fat estimates also carry error, which affects current lean mass and the target body weight shown at a chosen body fat percentage.
The Casey Butt test is best understood as an evidence-informed frame-size estimate for natural lifters. It is not a medical assessment, a drug-use detector, or proof that a particular physique is natural or enhanced.
