Technique

How to perform Bodyweight Side Lateral Raise

  1. Begin in a modified forearm plank supported on one forearm and your feet, with both legs straight.
  2. Position the working shoulder past the grounded elbow so the upper arm starts slightly folded toward your torso; keep the other arm free of the floor.
  3. Keep your abdomen braced and your body long, without letting your hips sag.
  4. Push the floor away through the planted forearm, moving your torso away from the upper arm and rotating slightly open toward a side plank.
  5. Keep the forearm planted and the elbow angle approximately fixed so the working shoulder produces the relative lateral-raise motion.
  6. Return under control to the starting position and repeat, then change sides.
  7. For an easier variation, support the lower body on bent knees instead of the feet.
