Technique

How to perform Friction Side Lateral Raise

  1. Stand side-on to a solid wall, wrap a towel around the working forearm, and place that forearm against the wall with the elbow bent.
  2. Position your feet far enough from the wall to lean some bodyweight into the padded forearm; keep your trunk braced and your feet secure.
  3. Press the forearm into the wall and slide it upward in an outward arc, raising the upper arm away from your side while keeping the elbow angle approximately fixed.
  4. Use the working shoulder to move your body away from the wall as the forearm slides; maintain pressure so bodyweight and friction provide resistance.
  5. Stop around shoulder height or at a comfortable controlled range, allowing the shoulder blade to move with the arm.
  6. Lower under control while maintaining contact, then repeat on the other side.
  7. Stand closer to the wall and reduce pressure to make the exercise easier; move the feet farther away or increase controlled pressure to make it harder.
