Technique

How to perform Handstand Flag

  1. Kick or press into a solid freestanding handstand with your hands shoulder-width apart, elbows locked, shoulders stacked over wrists, and a tight hollow body.
  2. Slowly open your legs into a wide straddle, squeezing your glutes and quads and pointing your toes to lower your center of mass and improve stability.
  3. Shift your hips laterally toward the right hand while simultaneously shifting your shoulders subtly in the same direction.
  4. Keep both elbows straight as your torso and hips “flag” over, allowing your left foot to dip slightly lower than your right.
  5. Lighten the left hand by pressing harder through the right palm and fingertips, maintaining square shoulders and active shoulder depression.
  6. Aim to hold most of your weight on the right hand while the left hand remains lightly on the floor for balance.
  7. Pause and breathe steadily in the flagged position, keeping your core braced and ribs tucked so your spine stays straight even while tilted.
  8. Return to center by pressing evenly through both palms, bringing your hips back over your midline and closing your straddle, then repeat the flag to the opposite side for balanced training.
